SUNSET

Oil on Canvas, 150 x 100 cm, Framed in Floating Oak 153 x 103 cm

What happens when a natural surface dissolves almost completely into atmosphere?

Sunset began with close observation of the textured surface of a River Red Gum, where weathered bark, colour and light combine to form an intricate visual language. As I worked, the bark gradually ceased to be simply a surface and instead suggested an imagined landscape, where atmosphere emerged not through the depiction of place, but through the experience of light itself. The painting explores the moment when close attention transforms the familiar into something expansive.
