Just experimenting with using syllabic metre. This little poem uses two stanzas where the lines run 3 syllables, 5 syllables, 5 syllables, 6 syllables, and then 3 syllables.

The mammoth

Stands by me, smooth tusks

Curved up like shaved larch,

Soft eyes so kind, like yours,

My darling.

I stretch out,

Stroke her matted coat,

Her trunk; feel warm breath

On my palm, she shows no

Fear or qualm.
